Description :
A group of 14 students visited the Savitribai Phule Pune University, exploring its
main building and four quarters. They learned about the building’s history,
including its construction by the British, its Italian architecture with Indian
influences, and the symbolism of its various monuments. The students discovered
the contrasting living conditions of the British officials and the Indian servants
who built the university. They also learned about the different materials used in
the construction of the university and the effort it took to maintain its luxurious
elements.
The main building was adorned with paintings and decorations from around the
world, and a tunnel was used as a shortcut for servants. The banquet hall, once
decorated with paintings of British officials, now features paintings of important
Indian personalities. The monument was built as a refuge from Bombay’s rain.
The students also visited museums housing old artifacts and exhibits on human
evolution. This visit highlighted the educational value of monuments in preserving
and conveying historical, cultural, and societal values.
