With an expansive growth in the Ed-tech industry in recent years, it is quite evident that the use of digital devices and learning opportunities online has paved the way for Game-Based Learning. Many educational games like Kahoot, Minecraft, expose learners to targeted content through real-world situations and help learners develop essential life skills.
Game-based learning is a teaching method that balances educational materials with the strategies, rules, and social aspects of playing a game. It plays important role in teaching by making students to collaborate, communicate, interact and work in teams. Gaming creates a dynamic that can inspire learners to develop 21st Century skills like problem solving, creativity, collaboration and build an emotional connection to learning. It is for the above reasons we at the HDFC School Pune have adopted to the game based learning. In the classroom, Minecraft complements reading, writing, math, and even history learnings. Importantly, Minecraft also teaches business principles, STEM knowledge, and global perspective.
The students of Grade V to Grade XI, have been engaged in creating projects using Minecraft. Students adopted Sustainable Development Goals as their theme for Inter Disciplinary Project to provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet. Students across the grades were given the opportunity to research on SDG’S and represent their research and findings using Minecraft.
Minecraft teaches sharing responsibilities, designating roles, negotiating designs, and completing projects—all incredibly valuable career skills. In addition to familiarity with computer hardware and functions, kids gain experience with Minecraft game design principles and coding. These STEM abilities (science, technology, engineering, and math) are valuable in a 21st century workplace.
