Date of event: July - 2024

Description :

“We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams.”

On the 12th of July 2024, HDFC school held an inter-house dance competition. Students from the five houses: Neer, Amber, Agni, Vayu, and Vasundhara from Grade IX-XII mesmerized the audience with their skilled classical dance performances andleft them energized with their folk-dance performances.

Bharatnatyam and Kathak were the chosen mediums of expression by the students for classical dance, and Garba and Bhangra for folk dance.

Bharatanatyam is a dance of Tamil Nadu. It traces its origins back to the Natyashastra, an ancient treatise on theatre written by the mythic priest Bharata. The dance movements are characterized by bent legs while feet keep rhythm. Kathak is a dance of northern India and is often a dance of love. The movements include intricate footwork accented by ghungroos and stylized gestures adapted from regular body language. Garba is commonly performed at festivals and on other special occasions in the state of Gujarat, India. It is a joyful style of dance, celebrates fertility, and honours womanhood. Bhangra is a north-Indian folk dance associated primarily with the spring harvest festival Baisakhi.

The participants were judged based on their expressions, choreography, synchronization, and costume by Shimantika Basu, the dance teacher.

The event concluded with an address by the Principal, Ms. Anita Makkar, who emphasized on the importance of dance as an activity that enriches the mind, body, and soul.
